Mary Lou Retton Illness: Mary Lou Retton is an American gymnast who won the all-around gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics. She began gymnastics as a child and flew to Texas in 1983 to train with famed teachers Bela and Marta Karolyi, who also mentored Nadia Comaneci. She was born in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1968. After being the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the individual all-around competition, Mary Lou Retton became a national hero.
